Other Project Passions

Post by mercaholic »

Like most of us on JOMS with side lines projects and in between working on old Mercs, I have kept up a passion for restoring old Motorcycles into running condition.

I'd done up a few '60s BSA's and Triumps but stayed focused on some of the early '70s and '80s UJM's as the newer ones while incredibly dependable are too complicated with all the FI , traction and wheelie controls, fly-by-wire systems etc.

Lately I have been working on a early 2000's Suzuki Bandit that has been one of my biggest challenges. The previous owner had overfilled the crankcase such that it developed hydraulic 'lock'. Like our Mercury passion for in-line engines, this one is of 1200cc's and an in-line four cylinder, carbs, not FI and overall not too complicated. Luckily it came cheap but took a lot of my time and resources to get it back on the road.

Anyway, it had it's shakedown run yesterday since temps were barely tolerable. Now I need to figure out whether to get rid of it... :?:

What are your other interests, hobbies etc?

I'm fixing up an old lake cottage for my family. Inside is pretty much done.

Before & after of the kitchen are first two pics.

Kitchen after remodel (we LOVE it!!)

A picture of the roof after the overhanging trees were removed. (we lived RIGHT NEXT DOOR for 10years and could barely see this cottage). 2,300ft/sq of 2x6 tongue & groove Southern Yellow Pine roof deck was replaced and we doubled up two Western Red Cedar roof beams to eliminate vertical support in kitchen and lakeside where sliding glass doors were removed to enclose the exterior porch.
Roof around chimney area.

Roof from under chimney area.

Last is lakeside before & after. Next on agenda is a large addition and two story garage. Addition will have a new, large laundry/storage/cleaning room, office for my wife and a mudroom/hallway to the garage. (When this is done, by next year I hope, I will be thinning out my entire old outboard & related items collection!)
Lakeside picture during remodel. Left side was screened porch (now master suite) front was 10x55ft exterior porch.

I have jumped head first into the restoration of Kevin's 1956 Chevrolet 6400 2 ton truck. I have been working on it almost every day, often all day. We managed to keep moving along, only slowed during the below zero weather, but still kept at it. It is coming along pretty well. It is pretty well torn apart, but that is what it takes. Even a though it is a solid truck, being 64 years old, it is going to have some rust. I just about have all of the cab and doors done with the rough body work. I still have a lot of blocking to do.

I have been pretty well focused on restoring my son Kevin's truck since Christmas. We hope to have it together by the 4th. A lot of work to go, but it is slowly making progress.
(I did restore a 1975 9.8hp long shaft last week, ..I have to keep some focus. )

Steve, how about an update on Kevin's 2-ton truck? I last saw a picture outside of the cab painted blue, no bed, new front tires...

Thanks for asking Tom.

I forgot to update this project. I have some better photos on my phone, I will add them. This project went from December 2020 till about June 2021 till we had it on the road. It is a lot of fun, but it is a TRUCK. It rides like one. Kevin has hauled a lot of things with it, and it catches a lot of attention. I even pulled my Airstream with it once. Lately I have been stuck in my basement finally finishing the area that is not my shop. Been a big project.
