Eli in paraphenalia at Taunton.jpg

Eli is a seventh grader at Chester Academy (NH), a member of the National Junior Honor Society and a Boy Scout.
He also plays the trumpet in the school band and is trying out for the school jazz band.
He has a younger brother (8) and sister (6).

His finishes at Lockhaven this year were Saturday:  3rd in AXR  Sunday: 2nd in AXR and 3rd in JSR.
will have to await APBA results for the rest.  He had good heats in both hydro classes (JSH and AXH) but failed to put two together for good overall results.  Nine boats in JSH!  This was his first weekend running four events, they aren't all usually run in the NE.
Last year at Lockhaven.  Only ran JSH and got 2nd on Saturday and 4th on Sunday out of a field of 7.

His JSH first win was at Taunton, MA last year, with a bent fin on Sunday.
He also got 2 more firsts in JSH on Sunday at Kingston, NH last year and Sunday at Standish, MA this year.
His first attempt at JSR was in a borrowed boat on Sunday this year at Milton, NH - he got a strong 2nd and a 3rd in JSH.

At Thompson, CT this year he was surprised with a 'birthday' runabout (blue in photo).  This was his first time running three events
In his first time in the boat he got 2nd on Saturday and 1st on Sunday (JSR).
He also won the JSH class, but was disqualified for height (1/16-in too high) which was my fault :(
In future he checks height and tuck on every boat, every day.

Right now, Eli's family is running three boats, two hydros and the blue runabout - and two engines.  They don't swap props and restrictor on a single engine between J and AX.

Results from Taunton last weekend:
Saturday:
AXH:               4th out of 6
JSRunabout:    2d of 3
JSH:                3d of 8

Sunday:
JSH:                2d of 8  (he had a 2d and a 4th, the winner has a 1st and a 5th, so she won on points - see photo about)
JSRunabout     2d of 3  (he had a 2d and a 1st, the winner had a 1st and a 2d, although Eli's winning gap was larger, the winner's fastest lap was faster - so he won on time)
AXH:               5th of 6 (1 point out of 3rd place)
So Eli drove really great on Sunday and we learned a lot about the rules - we've been on the other end of some of these close finishes in the past and they average out in the long run.

Next weekend is Crystal Lake in Redwood, NY - this may only be JSH, will have to wait to find out.
The weekend after that is Kingston, NH, which will likely be the same three classes as last weekend.
If you're in either area, stop in on Sat or Sun afternoon and say hello to us in the 42-A pits.

Here's Eli's pull at the Sunday awards - several of these were for earlier races this year.
Eli's Trophies.jpg

Shown here is his new O'Conner hydro.  We'll be running this in both J and AX hydro events for the rest of the year.
The white/green Racecraft will get some rest until his Eli's little brother gives it a go next May.

We call it "Freeman Farms Racing", but much thanks anyway.
Here are a couple of photos from Lockhaven (thanks to Mike Rourke, who knows a thing or two about runabouts.)

Boy, that looks like fun!  If I was 50 years younger and a hundred pounds lighter...

Make that 130 pounds.

Yes, it does look like fun.
Eli weighs 89-lb without the orange safety gear.
We add 52-lbs of lead to the blue runabout to make the 330-lb minimum for AXR, 22-lb for JSR.
The empty boat weighs 72-lbs with steering and throttle.
Most of it, save the transom and floor, is 2-mm plywood.

Eli had an eventful weekend at Crystal Lake, NY

Friday.  Very windy, flipped in his first turn.  Wind under the starboard sponson.
A little ripped plywood, but no real damage.  Dried the engine out and got him out there again.

Saturday:  J testing and then all races cancelled due to wind.

Sunday:  8:50 AM start.  Two heat Saturday races immediately followed by one heat Sunday race.
Winds lower and from opposite direction, but still a factor.   Finished about 3:45 PM.
J Hydro:      Sat: 3rd  Sun: 3rd
AX Hydro:    Sat: 2nd Sun: DNF - lost gas tank at the same spot as Friday's flip - probably my bad.  He did very well in a field of 6.
J Runabout  Sat: 1st on time  Sun: 3rd - near collision entering start gate, nice save!, lost plane and had to restart with several gallons of water in boat.

This weekend is the end of the season for us.  Racing a Kingston, NH Sat and Sun 12:00 to 4:00 PM

Perhaps our last race of the year was the Kingston Fall Classic in Kingston, NH.
With 78 entries it was the best attended of these annual classics.
There were 9 entries in JSH and AXH, with about 1/2 of these having common drivers.
About 1/2 of the J drivers were not old enough for AX and another 1/2 either too old or too heavy for JSH.
Eli ran in three classes and these are his results.
AXH:
Sat: 4th of 9
Extra Day, single heat: spin out before the start (very rough at the far end) - managed to stay in the boat, recovered, started dead last by a country mile and finished 7th of 9.
Sun: 3rd of 7 - finished 2nd in the 1st heat.
Eli in AXH 21.jpg

Sunday Bubba Burgah Awards in AXH
Sunday AXH Trophies.jpg

JS runabout:
Sat+Sun: 2nd of 3
Eli in JSR 1.jpg

JSH:
Sat: 3rd of 9
Extra Day, single heat: 4th of 9
Sun: 3rd of 9
Eli in JSH 6.jpg

We might make the Tabor City, NC Halloween Classic, but chances are this is the end of 2015.
If so, Eli will finish with 8445 combined points in only 13 total races - this includes 525 points in AX runabout at Lockhaven (2 races)
The engine that we've use exclusively for J is already torn apart of fresh pistons and rings
Dscn5813.jpg

it also needs every moving part in the gearfoot replaced - that was probably costing him 100-150 RPM at the end of the summer
I ordered the parts today, so 2016 is in the works!

Tabor City results (as per my notebook - I'll make corrections if necessary when they are posted)

Firstly, we got back at 7:25 AM and he made the 8:00 school bus.

Saturday:
JSH: 2nd
AXR: 8th of 9 boats - I gave him a poor setup of this class  :-( , only the 2d time we've run it.  He did well to stay on the boat.
AXH: 6th and 4th (3d day)
JSH: 1st and 3rd (3d day)
so, he got a couple of trophies Sunday AM.

Sunday:
JSH: 3rd
AXH: 2nd - missing 1st place by less than 1/2 a boat length - a very exciting race, with gun jumpers, a lost cowling, and one flip in turn 2.
There were 8 boats, including 5 of the top 8 nationally ranked AXH drivers in APBA.
This was a very encouraging result for Eli, who was also the youngest & least experienced driver on the course.
We skipped the runabouts in order to get the kids back for school.
Eli really wanted to run JSR and I wanted another shot at setting up AXR, but we left and drove all night.
I have some nice photos that I'll post later.

Here are some photos from Tabor City.
I will buy the WIlliams' photos and get the clean versions.  He takes a hell of a picture.
Only his 2nd try at AX runabout.  I haven't got the set-up right, but he did well with it.

Got the AX Hydro sorted pretty well - only 45-lbs of lead as Eli has gained a little this summer.
Note the small "3-B" decal in memory of Bill Giles, "the Ancient Mariner", may he R.I.P.

Coming out of turn 2 (or 4 if your from NASCAR) - Eli looks up at Lily bouncing on the inside - her momentum is "toast".

Nationally in APBA he finished 9th in JSH and 10th in JSR.

He'll be thrilled to receive it.  Much thanks.
A note on the name.
Eli and Quin are really brothers.  Same mother, same father.  Married and everything.
They have different last names because their mother wanted to have a son with her name.
Both brother and sister are Campbells.

Here are the 2016 updates to Eli's personal C.V.

He has entered the 8th grade and at 102-lbs can no longer get down to the minimum of 300-lbs in his O'Conner hydro.
So, he has, at most, one year left in J hydro.  His runabout is lighter.
He is still in the Chester Academy band and Jazz Club and is invited to participate with the Pinkerton Academy (grades 9-12) band at home football games.
He is still very active in Boy Scouts.

He was awarded the "Sportsmanship Award" by FLRC at this year's Crystal Lake Regatta.

He has been elected vice-president of the National Junior Honor Society at Chester Academy.

Nice going Eli, great to see involvement in music, civics, and sports(racing).  Sportsmanship is what its all about, its what makes the other racers want to be out there with you. icon_clap.gif  icon_clap.gif

Trophies are great but not as great as the great friends you make along the way. Boat racers bump together  :-)  Keep up the good work  icon_thumbup.gif  icon_clap.gif

Eli had another good season of racing.
He has entered high school at Pinkerton Academy (Derry, NH) and is a member of the band, playing trumpet.
He his also competing in crew as a novice rower and has also been entered in a few JV events, which is a plus for a freshman.
Crew has eaten into his racing quite a lot missing the Saturday half of the last three 2017 events, and dropping him down in points, both in APBA and SSOA standings.
In fact, his brother beat him in SSOA J Runabout points  .
He is still in Boy Scouts and continues to remain near the top of his class scholastically.
He is getting heavy (124-lb) and will discontinue the J classes next year (unless Quin needs another boat to make a class)
We've ordered a Sidewinder and will continue competing in A hydro.  He ran in three races, after turning 14, using the merc, getting a 1st and 2d finish.
The 1st was a fluke, but the 2d was real with no jumpers.
(He got the 1st at Lockhaven when everyone else jumped the gun in the 2d heat.  I joked that he would have jumped, too, but he wasn't fast enough to keep up   )
Once we understand the setup for A Hydro, we may add A Runabout.

Damn good boy!  Think of all those "troubled" kids that are a nightmare to their parents.
