Merc 300 - First water test

Postby mercaholic » Thu May 17, 2018 1:00 pm

Just finished working on this one.

I removed a '66 Merc 500 from the Ranger to mount this one up yesterday and must say that altho less HP, it picked up the boat well to a top end speed of 27mph.  I know that if I load up the boat with a few more bodies, I am best to change out the two blade prop.

I sold a Mk35A many years ago so this one reminded me of how well it idled and miserly took in fuel.

Since the boat is unrestored, I think I will leave the motor as is.

I think I will leave it on the Ranger for awhile longer.... [wrench.gif]

John, my Merc 300 pushed my Ranger 27-28 mph.

Great running motor!

My Mark 58 took the Ranger to 32 mph.

Excellent!

That looks great John! I'll bet MR G is jealous! He loves those 300s.

Chris, I'm convinced that there is something special about the Mk58's.  I had one that was very strong for a stock motor.

I also think the Ranger hulls have a limited top end to them.

I mounted my Mk78 to the same boat and only got into the higher 30's and it felt too skittish with a cross wind.  I  also ended up with lots of loosened rivets as a result.

I won't be trying that stunt again icon_thumbdown.gif

Anything over 34 mph is about it with out harming the hull.

Love your Feathercraft- I had a mess of them incl a '57 Vag II with the helm in the front
I had a 55A on mine & it ran superb
Mr G is not jealous- he is impressed/inspired 8-)

In Feb 2017 I bought a 300 powerhead from Big Stan at Grubb's meet- it had a stripped out sparkplug hole
I fixed the stripped out hole as soon as I got it home but it has been sitting since...
UNTIL YESTERDAY [wrench.gif]
I changed out the crank seals/brgs & I have a tower/foot already gone over & ready for a powerhead icon_clap.gif
